DIRECTOR: JEAN RENOIR

Prosper Mérimée’s play about a commedia dell’arte troupe touring Peru at the end of the 18th century becomes, in Renoir’s hands, a Technicolor celebration of the delicious deceits of theatrical artifice, appropriately enough, shot far from South America in Rome’s Cinecitta studios. The beginning of a loose trilogy of films about life and stagecraft, joined in time by French Cancan (1955) and Elena and Her Men (1956), with invaluable collaborations from star Anna Magnani and composer Antonio Vivaldi, whose Greatest Hits lend the score an air of insouciant laughter. According to François Truffaut, who named his production company after it: “The noblest and most refined film ever made.”
