DIRECTOR: CHRIS MARKER AND PIERRE LHOMME

A snapshot of Paris in the spring of 1962, in the aftermath of the ceasefire with Algeria, taken as urban Paris was being radically reshaped by the powers that be, Lhomme and Marker’s poetic, spirited, and enormously generous film looks at the lives of a broad cross section of Parisians—salesmen, young lovers, clergymen, engineers, immigrant students, playwrights, etc.—who can be heard to discourse on life, love, happiness, technology, and everything else under the sun, organized in broadly thematic sections. Cinematographer Lhomme provides the beautiful on-the-fly photography, while the poetry of the voiceover and ingenious montage are entirely Marker’s own.

“Both a tender portrait of a city and an indictment of a way of life… Marker and Lhomme’s urban portrait is haunted by the utopian portrait of an egalitarian society in which individuals live with rather than against others.”—Film Comment
