DIRECTOR: MIKLóS JANCSó
CAST: MARINA VLADY, JACQUES CHARRIER, EWA SWANN
A sprawling historical drama told with only thirteen remarkable sustained shots, Winter Wind takes place in 1934 as Croatian separatists, supported by Hungary, struggle to declare independence from Yugoslavia by any means necessary. Jancsó filters these earth-shaking geopolitical events through the experience of one ascetic anarchist, Marko (played by the film’s French producer, Jacques Charrier), who finds himself unable to trust even his closest comrades.
“Elaborate, oblique power struggles… take on epic proportions as registered by a peripatetic camera pacing back and forth through the snowy landscape with the relentless deliberation of a caged animal.”—J. Hoberman, Film Comment
