Wings of Desire

1987 / 128min / 35mm

DIRECTOR: WIM WENDERS

Wings of Desire is just a really, really beautiful film. I picked it because—and you can sense it in the film—it’s a kind of allegory for reunification of Germany. Though it isn’t a Russian film, it seemed to belong here, because Berlin was this microcosm of the Cold War, and German reunification was in a way the first step in the fall of the Soviet Union. The film itself is about an angel—played by Bruno Ganz, who’s just amazing in the role—who falls in love with a mortal and decides to become a mortal himself, I guess there’s also an allegory for art in here, too, but more than anything it’s just this gorgeous film about Berlin.”—Kon Trubkovich

Wings of Desire was curated by Kon Trubkovich as part of his program The Russians Love Their Children Too, co-presented with Gagosian.
