“It’s very personal to me because it was the first American children’s movie that I saw in Russia, and I was obsessed with it as a kid, I would watch this movie dubbed in Russian every day after I got home from school. Part of my routine was to watch The Goonies after I got home and then make fake maps and hide them around the house. I was like eight or nine, and I had this idea of America in my mind. I think I thought that everyone lived like they do in the Pacific Northwest, with this beautiful coastline. So The Goonies is a special movie for me. It shows this pretty easygoing 1980s Americanism, this perfect bucolic kind of life, in contrast to what you see in the 1990s movies, where you really see society falling apart.”—Kon Trubkovich
