With introduction by Zoe Beloff

Screening together publicly for the first time, this program brings together Zoe Beloff’s trilogy of works reimagining the unrealized Hollywood projects of radical 20th century artists. In 1930, Sergei Eisenstein pitched a science-fiction film to Paramount Pictures inspired by the modernist architecture of Bauhaus. Eleven years later, Bertolt Brecht arrived in Los Angeles, where he wrote a film treatment loosely based on a Life Magazine article imagining a family of farmers put on display in a suburban model home at the Ohio State Fair. Novelist and film critic James Agee wrote a post-apocalyptic comedy for his hero Charlie Chaplin, which saw his Little Tramp character navigating the rubble of a bombed-out New York City. Together, these short films portray a transfixing alternative history of what might have happened had these figures manned the dream factory for a shift.
