DIRECTOR: MARIA MAGGENTI

CAST: LAUREL HOLLOMAN, NICOLE ARI PARKER

Featuring a Q&A following the 6:45pm show on 11/24 with Maria Maggenti (writer/director) and Dolly Hall (producer), moderated by Scott Macaulay.

Working-class high school senior Randall “Randy” Dean (Laurel Holloman, The L Word’s Tina) is behind the cashier’s counter at her gas station job one day when along comes Evelyn “Evie” Roy, Jr. (Nicole Ari Parker), a popular, well-to-do classmate who suddenly exhibits an acute interest in Randy. Maggenti’s justly beloved screwball comedy-inspired lesbian romance, a central work of New Queer Cinema, offers a poignant portrayal of two teenagers finding first love and coming out—while at the same time, by depicting a relationship uneasily conducted across boundaries of class, acknowleges that there are problems that coming out alone doesn’t solve.
