DIRECTOR: DARYL DUKE
CAST: RIP TORN
Wallowing in everything that Nashville publicists preferred to keep off the record—the drinking, the womanizing, the fake smiles, the cheap motels, the record station payola—Payday just might be the realest movie about country music ever made. Texas tornado Rip Torn has the role he was born to play in the varmint Maury Dann, a hard-drinkin’ hillbilly warbler who’s part Hank, part George Jones, and all trouble, leaving a trail of wreckage behind him as his Cadillac crosses the southeast. Location shooting in Alabama lends the proceedings an unmistakable Southern-fried veracity, while Torn, pulling no punches in playing a feckless bastard, has just enough charm in his wildcat grin to explain what keeps folks along for the ride.
