DIRECTOR: OUSMANE SEMBèNE

Followed by a Q&A with Mayukh Sen on 11/6

The first film by a Sub-Saharan African filmmaker to gain an international reputation, writer-turned-filmmaker Sembène’s feature debut gives voice to the silent suffering of Diouana (Mbissine Thérèse Diop), a black African nanny who has followed her white French employers from her nativ Senegal to the Riviera. Through piquantly deployed flashbacks, Sembène describes homesick Diouana’s culture shock whiplash, and the newly awakened pretensions of her employers once again in white company. “Of all African film directors, Sembène is the first to confer value to images.”—Med Hondo
