Mobile Homestead

2012 / 157min / DCP

DIRECTOR: MIKE KELLEY

The homestead, a single-story, white clapboard, ranch-style job, is an exact replica of the one that Kelley grew up in on Palmer Road, in the Detroit suburb of Westland, reproduced in 2005 for a site-specific public art project on the grounds of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit (MOCAD), where it was ostensibly intended as a community center/gallery. In 2010, as Kelley’s homestead was slated to travel back and forth between downtown and suburbs on a circuit Michigan Avenue, he produced a trilogy of documentaries charting this intended course, documenting the economically and ethnically diverse neighborhoods and residents encountered along the route. The result is a deeply eccentric city symphony, and a spiky interrogation of the platitudes behind public art.
