Take the bones of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, move the action to the far-flung planet “Altair IV,” and dress up the proceedings in CinemaScope and Eastmancolor and you’ve got this triumph of high ‘50s science-fiction. Commander Adams (Leslie Nielsen) touches down on the remote planet to find the only signs of life remaining from an earlier expedition are Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), daughter Altaira (Anne Francis), and their mechanical servant. The iconic Robby the Robot would be an influence on much sci-fi to come, but no less impactful was the pioneering electronic score by Bebe and Louis Baron, the first fully electronic score for a major motion picture.
