Leo the Last
DIRECTOR: JOHN BOORMAN
CAST: MARCELLO MASTROIANNI, BILLIE WHITELAW
Marcello Mastroianni is the eponymous Leo, an exiled prince reduced to living in shabby gentility in his London mansion where, as loyalist countrymen ply for his attention plot for his return to the throne, he instead begins to take an active interest instead in the poverty in the neighborhood around him. Mastroianni’s immensely charming performance is the beating heart of Boorman’s undervalued and underseen urban fable, a film that makes bold creative gambits through its desaturated palette, striking production design, and experimental score.
