Visconti’s epic adaptation of Giuseppe di Lampedusa’s celebrated novel of the same name, set in 19th century Sicily during the period of Garibaldi’s unification of Italy, is at its core the story of a long party coming to a close: the end of a centuries-long aristocratic spree, splendid and venal, embodied in the personage of Burt Lancaster’s majestically melancholy Prince Salina, a graying eminence who radiates the gravity of a man who knows his time has come. Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale are on hand to represent a new, rising generation, but the movie lingers in the atmosphere of exhausted tradition thanks to the deflated pomp of Nino Rota’s score and the stately grace of Count Visconti’s camera, which seems to be following the dictates of obsolete, ancient ceremonies.
