DIRECTOR: CLINT EASTWOOD

CAST: WILLIAM HOLDEN, KAY LENZ

Eastwood made his name as a taciturn, seemingly invincible action star, but he showed his true interests as a director early: an interest in finely shaded character and the emotional currents that pass between people, things that would combine to make him a master of the melodrama. Breezy, Eastwood’s core audience-alienating third feature, tracks all the hesitations and self-doubts of love as it begins to grow between the carefree “Breezy” (Kay Lenz), a hippie in her late teens, and the middle-aged Frank (William Holden), settled into a post-divorce routine of cynicism and isolation in a midcentury modern beach house that acts as a fortress to keep the world at bay. May-December romance is an old story, but Eastwood and his cast approach the material with such sensitivity and emotional acuity as to render every moment fresh, felt, and totally true.
