Chronique D'Anna Magdalena Bach
DIRECTOR: JEAN-MARIE STRAUB & DANIÈLE HUILLET
Straub and Huillet’s breakthrough feature, a decade in the making, tells the story, in its own unobtrusive way, of Johann Sebastian Bach and his wife, Anna Magdalena. Using narration from the fictionalized journal of Anna Magdalena (Christiane Lang) and the music of Johann Sebastian, performed by famed harpsichordist (and first-time actor) Gustav Leonhardt, the narrative plays out in chronological order in actual locations important to Bach’s life, often in single, unbroken takes. Paying tribute to a Baroque master, Straub and Huillet paradoxically produced a film of austere command, and a modern masterwork.
