One of Varda’s most purely beautiful movies, and one of her most challenging as well, calling into question the cost of that beauty. Carpenter François loves his wife and he loves his mistress, so why should they not all make house together? The muted pastels and soft-focus cinematography by Jean Rabier suggest earthly paradise, though beneath the glacéed surface lurks a sly critique of François’s thoughtless hedonism, at once glorying in the sybaritic sensuality and conveying the barrenness of the single-minded, selfish pursuit of happiness.
