Bergman’s 1980 TV drama gives center stage to two supporting characters from Scenes from a Marriage, the bickering couple Peter and Katarina Egermann (Robert Atzorn and Christine Buchegger), whose quarrels suddenly seem like small potatoes when Peter becomes involved in a shocking and squalid crime. Backtracking from the moment of crisis, Bergman, in his most innovative mode, uses flashbacks, nested dream sequences, and shifts in film format to track the fracturing of both a marital union and an individual psyche, as Peter is pulled beyond rescue by the undertow suck of depression. With Dear Director, Lindeen’s short based on a sixteen-page fan letter written to Bergman after a 1980 viewing of From the Life of the Marionettes by the American jazz pianist Kazzrie Jaxen, who stars as herself.
