Paths of Glory
DIRECTOR: STANLEY KUBRICK
A work of astonishing precocity, both for its technical virtuosity and remarkable insight into human nature, this was the breakout work by the wise-beyond-his-years Kubrick, and the film that initiated his status as one of the great film artists. Accurately, if too easily, thought of as an anti-war film, this compact tale of the line between cowardice and intelligence is essentially an anti-stupidity film. The film opens with Colonel Dax (Kirk Douglas) in the trenches and then in the courtroom, with outcomes inevitable in both when at the mercy of men who will go to any length to preserve an imagined dignity they never possessed to begin with.
Paths of Glory is screening as part of the Kubrick x 8 series.
